Upcycle design is all about giving waste, discarded and/or old stuff a new function and greater value. This blog has grown into one of the largest and maybe the largest archive
on the web showing what can be done with waste and discarded material and objects. But again, upcycleDZINE wants to emphasise that it’s so important for our environment that recycle- and/or upcycle design should always have the ability to be recycled or upcycled again. It just felt appropriate to mention this again because upcycle design is getting more attention and more and more designers want to create upcycle design.
Old stroller chassis becomes an eye-catcher
Now onto a design that shows pure upcycling. And by a designer who has been featured several times before on this blog because of his designs and craftsmanship. The design is a Stroller Chassis Coffee Table, created by WandelWerk, founded by Markus Schäfer and based in Stuttgart | Germany.
This coffee table is exactly what upcycle design should be. An old used, ready to be thrown away, or already discarded object combined with another wasted material or object. In this case a fantastic vintage stroller chassis that is so characteristic, together with a top made out of beautiful reclaimed wood. The result is in my opinion a real eye-catcher. And a nice example of furniture that can be recycled, or even better, upcycled in the future.
Markus Schäfer:
“THE TRADITIONAL WAYS OF THINKING MUST BE DISCARDED AND THE IMPROVISATION IS GIVEN FREE REIN. THIS FREE AND UNCONVENTIONAL WAY OF WORKING GIVES ME JOY AND DRIVES ME AND ALWAYS PUSHES ME TO TRY NEW THINGS.”
The goal of WandelWerk is to give new life to old things. Seeing the beauty in ugly. Giving back [more] value to things that have become useless. And to give unwelcome things a new admiration.

You may have seen other work by Markus Schäfer on upcycleDZINE like Chest Sofa and Easy Rider. Wandelwerk was formerly known as Sandman. His collection is a showcase of true craftsmanship and upcycle design.
One thing I do hope is that this coffee table has a set of good brakes.
