We all know the saying ‘less is more’. And lots of upcycle design shows this through simple, minimalist designs. There’s another thing I tend to think of whenever I see an interesting discarded object fit for lighting. I think ‘just put a bulb in it’. Of course it’s not always that simple, but sometimes it is. And that’s when you can see why less can be more.
Chinaware shows hidden beauty
upcycleDZINE has shown quite a few stunning minimalist upcycle design pieces. And on this blog you can find some very nice ceramic and porcelain that has been upcycled. But when I stumbled upon today’s featured lighting design I was intrigued. Not just by the way the products are upcycled, but by the hidden beauty it reveals.
These pendants are made out of vintage Chinaware. The creations are by a Dutch Etsy store called UPservies, founded by Karin Bakker. Whenever a light bulb is put inside a ceramic or porcelain cup, it shows a warm and friendly glow. But what’s really mesmerising is the way the light reveals the colouring, patterns and texture of the translucent object. It shows characteristics you wouldn’t have seen otherwise.
UPservies:
“It started with doing someone a pleasure. The daughter of a friend had just bought her first house and her mother wanted to give her a special keepsake from granny, who just moved to a retirement home. We received a coffeepot, a sugar bowl and a milkjug from granny’s vintage Chinaware and made a set of pendants from it.”
If you’re looking for lighting to add some sparkle or charm to a room, well this might be something for you. Please visit the UPservies online shop to see their very nice collection.
