Upcycling oil barrels is popular with upcycle designers. Many oil barrels have been cleverly transformed into some truly magnificent upcycle pieces of furniture and lighting that would look great indoor or outdoor. One of those creative companies is Dutch upcycle collective Indusigns. They have been featured several times on upcycleDZINE showing some incredible creations.
Oil barrels and pets
This time we focus on a very popular animal product. Do you love to give your furry friend a snuggly place to nap? Then this industrial, unique, and handmade dog/cat bed is it! This stylish cool dog bed is made by upcycling half a 200-liter oil barrel. The sturdy dog bed is standard available in the colors black and rust (the most popular). It is available with a nice matching gray comfortable cushion. This awesome dog/cat bed (yes, cats love it too!) is 88 cm long and 60 cm wide. Suitable for most dogs, just unfortunately not for the huge whoppers.
Characteristics
An oil barrel, or storage drum, is a cylindrical container typically made of steel that is used for storing or transporting liquids such as crude oil, fuel, or water-based paints. It is often used for onsite storage of these liquids before they are taken to a refinery or petroleum tank farm.
Indusigns:
“We scour flea markets, old iron dealers, farmyards, bulky waste on the street, and the internet to collect useful industrial items for our designs. That can really be anything, including oil barrels.”
Environmental benefits
Once the barrel is emptied out and cleaned for re-use, it can be crushed and recycled. But, as we know, it can also be upcycled into various products. The environmental benefits of upcycling can be seen in these upcycled oil barrels. Indusigns was able to reuse something that is very durable and would usually go to waste or landfills.
Indusigns
Indusigns is founded by two brothers Gijs and Chiel Bodt. They joined forces and started the company in 2013. Chiel’s creativity and passion for design and Gijs’ enthusiasm for marketing and social media eventually led to the creation of Indusigns.
They are collectors and find industrial supplies by looking at flea markets, old iron dealers, farmyards, the internet, etc. This could be anything from used oil barrels to zinc barrels to old tools and steel jerry cans. The more rust, the better!, is their motto. The little extra effort that Indusigns put into their products is what makes them unique and ensures their quality. Waste does not exist to them! “Waste is only waste if we waste it!”
