Today upcycleDZINE is showing you something completely different. The creations are more in the art category than in design. I’m talking about robot sculptures. There’re some designers out there that look at waste and see a way of turning bits and pieces into amazing and unique looking creatures. Among those artists are a few that create robots by upcycling bolts, nuts, screws, wiring, cans, etc. But the ones I’m showing you today are almost like an entire family.
A robot with recognizable parts
Some time ago I received a message in my email inbox from a French artist called Gille Monte Ruici, who wanted me to have a look at his Robot collection entirely made out of waste. During all my quests on the web looking out for upcycle design/art, I’ve come across a huge variety of fantastic and original work. Also quite a few robot sculptures.
Whenever I get a message from somebody requesting to have a look at her/his work, I just can’t refuse. So I did visit Gille’s collection and had a good look around and found myself really enjoying his sculptures. I was pleasantly surprised to see a range of robot sculptures that were different from the ones I had seen by other artists. These are more simple and fun in how they were made.
“I work only with recovered metal parts. All the assemblies are done by screw or bolts. Metal and the sheet are ideal for this kind of fixings. I like the matter, easy to work, with particular reflections, patinated, and which, pickled well, is harmonized easily.”
In general, he doesn’t have any preconceived idea, he works only with his “visual instinct”. The shape is born out of found equipment that turns into a trunk, a wild glance or a pair of arms. “Either the final vision is immediate or the idea of the potential must mature and will emerge later on.”

Gille restores varied scrap objects like, kitchen utensils, metal parts or tools of mechanics. His approach consists of giving them a second life by changing their original vocation.
The best and most fun aspect of looking at these robots is trying to recognize which parts were used or what object they might have belonged to. Try it yourself, it’s fun!
