DIY projects using pallets are still very popular and have been popping up everywhere. That’s not strange considering that it’s such an enormous versatile medium. If you thought the pallet ‘hype’ was over, think again. Pallet wood is still very popular among upcycle designers and people who like upcycle design.

Are old pallets safe for reuse?

There’s one aspect that we shouldn’t forget and that is that one should check out the history of the pallet. On a site called earth911.com is an article about the question: are pallets safe for reuse projects? According to Candice Miller, a horticulture educator and expert from the University of Illinois Extension: “You have to consider where [the pallet] came from, what’s been shipped on it and what you’re going to use it for.”

Rest assured, there are enough used pallets to be found or bought, that are safe for reuse. And that you can turn into stunning upcycle design. Just like this awesome coffee table that I found on Instructables with a great tutorial. It can be used inside or outside your home.

Hidden space inside

The designer and also creator of this multifunctional coffee table is Dirk Deus. The idea for this coffee table came from not being able to find the right table for their living room. The coffee table is made of 2 euro pallets and is movable on 4 heavy-duty casters. The main attraction and thereby its main feature is the huge storage space inside the table and the lift and the slide mechanism.

Multifunctional and solid

Together with having so much space inside this coffee table, it has also many small compartments for storage on the outside. Opening the coffee table is a piece of cake. Just by pushing one side it easily slides out. The other side can be easily lifted due to a hoisting mechanism supported by two gas springs. In that extended state, you would think that the lifted side couldn’t carry some load. But according to its creator, it still is able to carry 60 kg. And if this solid table is closed you can load more than 600kg.

What’s also great about this coffee table is that because of the extended parts you can use it as a sort of dining table while sitting on your couch.
So if you’re looking for a DIY multifunctional coffee table made from used pallets, well this might be something for you. Have fun.
