Last week I bumped into a very cool upcycle design piece made out of metal. It looks a bit like another design that has featured here on upcycleDZINE, Traffic Sign Furniture by Boris Bally.
In a way it has the same look and feel but than again it’s totally different because of the origin of the material and the design. The name of this furniture is ‘Aviation Stool‘ and the design is by AERO-1946, based in Bergisch Gladbach | Germany.
“In the summer of 2007 we started in our spare time to implement an old idea into practice: the production of a technically designed furniture unit for the living area. As design principle we took the way of classic aircraft. Specifically, the metal aircraft, as it was found at 1946. A time when the aviation industry, directly after the end of World War II, was looking for alternative markets (‘conversion’) and a time in which the aircraft was often very technically oriented.”
Aviation era shows in upcycle design stool
AERO-1946 started out making a closet and other pieces before designing and making the Aviation Stool. The stool is made out of scrap from old helicopters and airplanes. During maintenance work sheets of older models can be partially recycled. “Their different colors, caption tracks and rivet holes still refer to the original use. The high-quality sheets from aircraft vary between 0, 35 mm to 1 and the weight of the stool is between 1 and 1,5 kg. Even if these thicknesses are partly already extremely low, the finished stool is very stable, because its lightweight construction derived of the aircraft.
This upcycle design stool shows such a friendly shape in combination with a very strong construction. And as with the upcycled skateboard designs we saw un upcycleDZINE, the fact that the graphics and other markings still show adds so much character to the design.
