Made to measure: Table lamp made from rulers by Nikolai Sorensen
Lately it’s almost as if on upcycleDZINE rulers rule. Sorry for that, but I’m presenting you another one. I’ve said it before, the thing about rulers and yardsticks is that the lines, numbers and typo, make them very appealing to me.
Here are three more great examples of upcycle design made from yardsticks: the Yardstick Lamp and Yardstick Buffet [DIY] and Unit of Measure.

Rulers let you control the shape

And there’s always room on upcycleDZINE for more. So here’s a fantastic upcycle design piece called ‘Made to measure’ by Nikolai Sorenson based in Muriwai | New Zealand. It’s a fun and very adjustable table lamp made from recycled wooden rulers and old ceiling light inserts.

Nikolai: “The brief was to use predominantly one of two materials collected from the waste stream, and design and construct an object for the home using the words ‘table landscape’ to guide me.
I had to celebrate both my choice of material and where you found it, and use only cold construction techniques (i.e. nuts, screws etc) to make and assemble my object.”
The lamp is adjustable at three points, so you get very much control on the shape and on how you want the lamp to function on a desk or table. And you can do this in a precise way by making use of the original function of the rulers.
