Sometimes I come across upcycle design that is so different that it catches my attention right away. And that’s what happened with today’s featured design.
The design, a wine rack, is called ‘In Vino Vitae‘ and is designed by Axel Yberg, founder of Akke Functional Art. Akke Functional Art is a modern furniture design studio ‘dedicated to exploring the dynamic between natural and industrial elements’.
A wine rack that symbolizes found comfort
In Vino Vitae, meaning ‘In Wine There Is Life’, isn’t just a design piece. No, it delivers a fantastic message. Axel Yberg: “I created this piece for cancer survivor Erin Zammett Ruddy. 100% of the profit from its sale has been donated to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in a successful effort to help her reach her goal of raising $100,000 (she managed to raise over $178,000)”.
Everything about this upcycle design piece has a meaning, is telling a story.

During the first discussion between Erin and Akke Functional Art, Erin requested a wine rack to symbolize the comfort she found in sharing & enjoying wine with her loved ones. The materials used, oiled wormy maple, reclaimed plumbing pipes and fittings, were not chosen randomly. Both the plumbing fittings and wood are reclaimed, symbolic of the second chance at life that has been granted.
I highly recommend you to visit the site of Akke Functional Art and read the whole story behind this design. It gives so much more meaning to the design.
