Hands of Time: from sanding disc to clock by qoowl – upcycleDZINE
We’re living in a digital age and almost everybody has a mobile phone or even smartphone. So there should not be such a need for traditional clocks. Just like the actual use of a watch is decreasing. But watches are still being sold and people still love to put a clock on their wall.
And maybe this featured upcycle design clock is one for you. This design has a very minimalistic shape. But the surface is the real eye catcher. The design by qoowl is called Hands of Time.

qoowl is founded in Eindhoven | the Netherlands by Quinten Peuling and Wisse Trooster. During their education at the Eindhoven University of Technology they got inspired by the modern production techniques, laser cutting and 3d printing. With these techniques qoowl explores the limits of the materials used.

A clock that tells a story

“Through the wear of the sanding disc the clock is telling the story of a craftsman. Time, the materials used and the way of working are all of influence on the appearance of the clock. Each clock is an unique piece. Which craftsman used the disc and what did he create? Sanding discs of qoowl and other craftsman are transformed into clocks. The stories of the discs are brought to their new owners, the ones who bought a clock.”

The production is partially with the laser cutter and partially done by hand. A number of parts will be produced with the laser cutter. The assembly and finish are done by hand. This includes the sanding of the clock with a sanding disc that might become a clock as well.
