PETROGLYPH: reclaimed plywood boards furniture by Nucleo – upcycleDZINE
An enormous amount of wood is used for making furniture. The result is that there’s also a big pile of discarded wood. Luckily Torino | Italy based design studio Nucleo, directed by Piergiorgio Robino, made a design for furniture using these discarded pieces.
The Petroglyph furniture collection by Nucleo features tables and chairs and is made from discarded pieces of plywood, varying in length, original shaped and in the end layered together. This creative collection has a rugged look with a modern character.

Plywood boards with a screen-printed hidden message

The Petroglyph collection recodes and reprocess scrap material sourced by the Nucleo Laboratory. Followed by making graphic text like scribbles in the preliminary phase of cave painting. Finally the most important part, the plywood boards are used as a screen-printed matrix. With paint a unique and unrepeatable message is transferred onto the wooden surface.

This way these plywood boards become a piece of media to support an even more relevant piece of art. After assembling the piece of furniture, graphic parts are visible but the the message is hidden which gives it a nice and very unique touch.

“After being assembled, the piece will carry an invisible message, a secret kept only on a canvas, where aphorisms inspired by Fyodor Dostoyevsky will celebrate beauty as the only form of salvation. Salvation in a double sense, the message hidden inside, the soul, and in the re-used material, the body visible to all. A tradition of re-using that has been lost during the last quarter century and now re-introduced.”
