Before you read this post I want to make sure that this not an advertisement spot or advertorial. I just want to share my experience and enthusiasm about a project. Like I said in my previous post, I painted a big display cabinet. Quite a big one, dimensions: lenght 2.60 m, width 0.60 m, height 2.35 m. For some time I have been looking for such a cabinet. The whole idea of painting a cabinet started when I stumbled upon a video by Annie Sloan about painting. Why Annie Sloan? Well she developed Chalk Paint® that is so fantastic to work with and can be used without sanding down or pre-treatment of the object.
She lives and works in Oxford | England and is probably the main reason for the painted furniture revolution through her easy, lively and creative approach to painting. She has a strong desire to communicate and empower people creatively which she does through her books, workshops and paint. And I can confirm that, just by seeing one of her videos made me buy her book and wanted me to start painting objects. She has been painting for over 40 years as well as writing numerous books on the subject. She has made her own very special decorative paint called Chalk Paint®, which is specifically designed for furniture, that can also be used on walls, floors and in paintings. This paint has been developed through Annie’s knowledge of paint, pigments and art history.
Painting a Cabinet gives it a second life
Like I said before, the paint is so great and therefore easy to work with, that it’s just fun to look for new objects to give a make-over. The first object I tried to paint was a coffee table. The Chalk Paint® is so much different than any other paint. It’s different in the way and the time it takes to dry, the structure, the surface, the look and the way you can paint.
And then there are many techniques and colors one can use to give it a certain look.
I went for a aged/used look on both the table and the cabinet. After two layers of paint, some sanding down on different spots, I gave them a wax finish which gives it a richer color.
The only thing I want to add to this experience is: go for it and give an old object a new look and character.
