Some designs don’t need much explanation. They just are. That’s what I realized looking at this sturdy table. It’s tough, cool-looking, and has nice graphic elements which I really like being a graphic designer. And the tabletop is made of upcycled materials. Well, that says it all.
The table shows the only way is up
Of course, there’s a bit more to say. This upcycle design table is a Dutch creation by a design company called Studio Hamerhaai [English: Studio hammerhead shark]. They saw potential in what other people tend to throw away.
This table has a mosaic top made out of transport crates in which Bullseye glass was shipped from the United States. They used the sides of these crates, printed with arrows and the word ‘UP’. Hence the name Optimist. And while we are on the subject of the word “up”, it also reminded me of that song ‘The Only Way is Up’, written by George Jackson and Johnny Henderson. But my favorite version is not the hit version by Yazz and the Plastic Population. No, it’s the version of that song in 1980 by Otis Clay. Yes, how time flies!
Slender and playful
Back to the design part. The side of the tabletop has a white lacquered band, which, according to the designers, always reminds them of an OREO cookie. The tabletop is finished with polyurethane lacquer. The base is formed by 2 frames that consist of white-coated steel. They are placed somewhat inwards which makes their appearance somewhat slender and playful.
Studio Hamerhaai turns waste into Dutch Design. All designs and creations are made in-house as much as possible. That’s in their own workshop in Heemskerk. The creative studio is founded by Boudewijn van den Bosch and Niki Schoondergang. They are also the makers and inventors of all their products.
