Lighting is the largest category on this website. There are so many different, unique, fun and inspiring upcycle design lamps. Most of them are made out of discarded objects or materials. And after they got upcycled these objects or materials got a totally new function.
But there are also lamps that were a lamp in their previous ‘life’. A few examples of such lamps are L25, Headlight lamp, Desk Buddy and Light Up. All of these designs didn’t get a completely new function, they’re still lamps. Thing that changed was the object and context they got upcycled into.
A streetlight for indoor use
And today I’m glad to add another upcycle design lamp that ended up in a new object and especially context. Have you ever thought about the possibility of having a streetlight inside your office or living room? Well I hadn’t until I saw this incredible and very impressive floor lamp.
The lamp is called Super Guppy Lamp and is designed by Marc Newson. Born in Sydney, he started experimenting with furniture design as a student. After graduation he travelled a lot and has worked in Tokyo, Paris and now resides in London.
Super Guppy Lamp is his first lighting design and was developed by Marc during his time in Tokyo working with design company Idée in 1987. The design is made out of a streetlight he found, attached to a curving tubular aluminium column. The column and base with wheels are existing elements found at Japanese builders merchants.
Marc Newson:
“I’d always loved Castiglioni’s ready-mades and once I got to Japan I was really excited by all the cool stuff in the builder’s stores. I found this factory that did great street lamp fittings. So I got a lamp and put on this piece of tubular steel.”

Marc Newson has been described as one of the most influential designers of his generation. He has worked across a wide variety of disciplines, ranging from furniture and homeware, to interiors and watches, to a car and a bicycle. His creative work also involves private and commercial aircraft, yachts, various architectural commissions, and signature sculptural pieces for clients across the globe. His work can be found at numerous museums around the world.
