Corrugated Cardboard is such an underrated material. Luckily upcycle designers see the true potential of cardboard. They start to think of more and more ideas for this eco-friendly material.
There are two ways cardboard is used in upcycle design. The purest way to upcycle cardboard is to use discarded or old cardboard, for instance, used boxes. It’s incredible how easy it is to create a lampshade out of this material. A nice aspect of using old cardboard is that there are still graphic elements visible, which makes it all the more unique. Another way and certainly sustainable is to use new recycled cardboard like the lamps by Graypants. This material is great to work with because it’s clean, flat, and therefore very suitable for laser-cut techniques.
Lightweight eco-friendly LED pendant
During this year’s Dutch Design Week another amazing upcycle design lamp was exhibited that uses old corrugated cardboard. It’s a very impressive design called 900 by Dutch industrial designer Wisse Trooster, founder in 2011 of design studio qoowl, based in Eindhoven | The Netherlands. He has been featured before here on upcycleDZINE with a very minimalist and original clock design called Hands of Time.
Pendant 900 is also a minimalist design and consists of several layers of corrugated cardboard. The name of the lamp refers to its weight, 900 grams. The cardboard layers are situated between two veneer layers that give the design a stylish accent. The veneer is customizable into various types. Pendant 900 uses an energy-efficient LED light.

Besides being customizable, 900 is also versatile in the way it suits various types of interiors and the way it can be used. To be more precise, the lamp can be connected to other copies. Only one adapter is required to create a string of multiple lightweight ‘floating’ lamps.
