Regular visitors of upcycleDZINE may have noticed that a wine barrel is a very inspiring object to upcycle. After 3 to 5 vintages the barrel is ready to be discarded. And that’s when these beautiful and aged objects can be upcycled. upcycleDZINE has shown some unique upcycled barrels or parts of barrels such as the BARRIQUE project by San Patrignano, with designs like ‘Miss Mondola‘ by Angela Missoni and DOC by Marc Sadler. Another example is Vortex by Stil Novo Design that uses the characteristic steel loops.
Wine barrel rings hand-cut into patchwork
And here’s another wine barrel parts design that proves that steel loops don’t have to stay in a circle form. It’s an island or bar light called STUDIO TETRIS by Wine Country Craftsman, based in Paso Robles, CA | United States and founded by artist Michael Weiss.
The lamp is made from repurposed steel wine barrel rings. Dozens of rings are hand-cut and welded to create a patchwork rectangle that highlights the unique texture and patina of each ring. The result is a intriguing piece of upcycle design with a fantastic history. All those pieces of steel actually do think of the video game Tetris and are just waiting to fall into place.
