Around the world, thousands of tyres are disposed daily. “In the USA, an estimated 300 million tires are disposed of annually, a figure that is absolutely staggering.” according to 1-800-RECYCLING.com. Tyres are not biodegradable, so they need to be recycled and repurposed rather than discarded. Recycling them costs a lot of energy making the process environmentally unfriendly. But always better than ending up in landfill.
Luckily there are some creative minds that found ways to upcycle old tyres into flip-flops, an ottoman or chair.
Car tyre provides unique urban look
A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a company that produced a whole line of homeware items made out of these robust discarded tyres. The collection is called DACARR and is designed by a Danish company called Muubs, based in Herning and founded in 2010 by Bent and Dorthe Povlsen. Muubs originated from the idea to create a unique company with furniture and interiors for individual homes. Their vision is to make honest long lasting design, unexpected enduring objects which age gracefully.
The raw and masculine rubber baskets and barrels from the Dacarr series are made from upcycled car tyres. This durable stylish collection has a raw and unique urban look that fits into many interior designs and gardens. The barrels have beautiful organic forms that reflects the materials original purpose as a car tyre. The barrels and baskets are also easy to clean.
The rubber baskets are available in various sizes and that’s why you’re able to create an interesting landscape of plants in your home or garden with plants and rubber cachepots in different heights and widths. The black, raw rubber serves a beautiful contrast to green leaves or cactuses. Another great use of the rubber baskets is that they can contain your paintbrushes, cooking utensils or tools.
Bent and Dorthe Povlsen:
“With a strong focus on craftsmanship and nature Muubs has created unique products that express authenticity and honesty. We work with artisans globally and locally to create the stuff we love and lust for. We design stuff which can move, touch & inspire.”
In the creation of a new product, the designs are tested by assessing whether men would like it. This gives the collection a bit more edge and a more masculine twist.
