Sometimes people ask me where they can find objects for upcycling. Well lots of objects and materials can be found in the world surrounding you, like inside your home or on the street. Other obvious places are junkyards and flea markets. Another question is where to buy upcycled products. Here at upcycleDZINE you can find more than 500 designs with links to the designer and their shop. And of course at Etsy, an online e-commerce platform for selling handmade items.
Another great place, offline in the real world, is a market/fair for handmade products. Not sure in what part of the world your living, but here in the Netherlands these markets are becoming very popular and more and more upcycle design can be found there. Just like the ‘Original Market‘ in Leiden on Easter Sunday this year. Although it was quite cold outside, it was great to see all those people exhibiting their products and designs. This market is a ‘lifestyle market’ where you can find products with a story. From handmade to vintage, sustainable and fair trade.
A friend that makes you happy
On that Easter Sunday morning I was very glad to stumble upon a few ucycle designers who caught my attention with their products. And one of them is a creative brand called Yucwood, founded by Tim Zaalberg and based in Oegstgeest | Netherlands. Yucwood stands for ‘Young Urban Creative Wood’. His lamps and accessories are handmade and show care and passion. Besides his full time job he fulfills his creative need by creating contemporary, original lamps especially made out of wood and metal.
Between several upcycle lighting products was one design that really stood out. It’s a desk lamp called DESK BUDDY, made out of wood and a bicycle lamp. This little ‘friend’ can be placed in each interior. A kids room or an industrial office or catering facility. The adjustable Desk Buddy will certainly be your friend because of its personal design and look. The bicycle lamp is wireless so you can put it on any desired location.

Of course I asked him if the bicycle lamp was old. And Tim said it wasn’t due to the fact that he wanted the lamp to be wireless. I said I hoped he would consider creating a version with a discarded lamp using a wire so it would be completely upcycled.
All in all a design that has a great fun factor and will truly make you happy. For instance when reading your favourite book.
