A well known saying is “A picture is worth a thousand words”. It means: ‘A picture tells a story just as well as, if not better than, a lot of written words.’ And that’s certainly the case with today’s featured upcycle design piece.
Seeing this makes you think. You want to know what it is, what you’re looking at and what the meaning could be behind this creation. And one important thing it does to me when I saw it was smile. This is a kind of design I like, it’s fun and serious at the same time. And it’s about upcycling.
Meat grinder with a deeper meaning
This one-of-a-kind upcycle design piece is a sculptural light creation by Finnish multidisciplinary artist and designer Reima Honkasalo. He’s based in Kaarina | Finland and works in fields like contemporary art, product design, graphic design, puppetry, photography.
The lamp is called Light Mincer and is a table lamp made from an discarded meat grinder and old power cords. Like I said before, this design makes you think. What could be the story behind this lamp or is it just a fun to watch creation? Somewhere I read that Reima’s intention was as follows: “What is the lamp producing — except light? Well, need for more electricity…!”
I always think that it’s great if someone gets the story behind a design/art piece. And if not, there’s always that beautiful and unique creation showing that discarded things can be turned into a new object with greater value. Environmental issues and sustainability are central values to Reima’s work. And the Light Mincer is a great example.

This lamp is a great addition to the kitchen utensils that already have been featured on upcycleDZINE like Crazy Rocket. Thing though about Light Mincer is that it’s not only about upcycling but also has a deeper meaning by being critical of modern society.
