Giving an old or discarded object a new and different function is what upcycling is about. The new upcycled piece gets added value. But sometimes designers think of ways to give an object a second function. Although that might not be considered pure upcycling, it’s still about added value and a different function.
Especially whenever an object isn’t interesting at all, upcycling can give it a boost to become very appealing. And if that upcyled object is also very functional, it is surely saved from being thrown away. For example take a look at SNAP by Be-elastic. A great system to upcycle lots of different objects into a table.
Simple and functional crate furniture
And now on to today’s upcycle design, PANRICO Crate Furniture by Merry Design Studio. Merry is a Spanish design company based in Madrid.
They thought about how we all reuse different containers in one way or another. On their website it says: “Unconsciously we reuse some containers, specifically most of the boxes that get into our hands … to save recipes, photos, cables, etc.”
So Merry designed a way to take Panrico crates and make them more attractive and give added value. By only using a few things such as wooden legs, these crates changed from a dull object into an interesting piece of furniture.
