Garden tools and kitchen utensils inspire upcycle designers. Especially objects found in a kitchen can turn out to be quite useful. But what about a combination of something used in the garden with a kitchen utensil?
Steam juicer produces light
Well, have a look at today’s upcycle design. It’s a desk lamp called Hefeklöße, named after a German type of dumpling. The design is by Ideenklette, founded by Micha Fohl and based in Kodersdorf | Germany. Some time ago I had the pleasure of showing another upcycle design by Micha, Lampshade Stand made out of old lampshades. And now another original piece.
The desk lamp is made out of handles of old hedge trimmers and an aluminum head of a steam juicer. So what’s a steam juicer? According to discount juicers: “The steam juicer works by steaming the produce to cause the cell walls to break and causes the juice to fall into a juice kettle which is then drained into jars or bottles. Due to the heat and extraction method, this juice is concentrated.”
When looking at the design of the desk lamp it seems all so simple. The handles seem to be made for this job and the pot is a perfect fit. For the power supply Micha used the tube of the juicer and for a friendly touch he installed a pull switch on the inside using a small cord. The design in a way shows steam upcycled into light.
Micha Fohl:
“Because of my varied interests, I have incorporated very different facets. Basic idea of my objects is to question consumption. I’m playing with the idea of values.”

Micha started Ideenklette to have the opportunity to present his current projects. “Everyone defines its values differently – and therefore the consumer – has a different understanding of value. If waste is however turned into something new, this structure is messed up. A rethink is needed. If an old discarded table is transformed with little means into a little eye-catcher and thereby is having disproportionately more value, I have reached my goal.”
All in all a surprisingly straightforward and fun looking lamp. But as always, one has to come up with the idea. It shows again what upcycle design is all about.
