When a bicycle is at the end of it’s lifecycle it usually gets thrown away and ends up as scrap metal, ready to be recycled. Quite a few designers noticed that there are some interesting bicycle parts to be rescued from going to waste. That’s why it’s great to see many inspiring upcycle designs made out of these characteristic bicycle parts. On upcycleDZINE are many of these designs to be found. And we’re adding another one to this amazing collection.

Bike desk lamp represents sporty spirit

It’s a design that has a nice history. The project is called ‘Bike Me Home‘ and is about bringing cycling obsession into your home and onto your desk. These desk lamps are creations by Industrial Kid, founded by Hungarian Peter Belso.


Peter has over 17 years of experience in sports management. The story began with the production of a folding bike. He wanted to keep his office wear clean, so decided to build a chainless commuter bicycle equipped with carbon belt drive system. The idea to upcycle the spare parts not used for the bike was the first step…
In the first photos of this post you see one of his early desk lamp designs that was made out of discarded bicycle parts. The first attempts were created by Peter as a solution when his daughter started school in 2013 and did not like sitting at the desk. Some friends asked him to create a lamp for their kids so he started to make them in different colours.
In 2015 Peter founded Industrial Kid to improve the original design and launch the bike desk lamp internationally.

The desk lamp uses an economic LED bulb. An extremely nice feature and certainly an eye-catcher is the fact that one can switch the light on and off with a gentle pull of the brake levers.

Industrial Kid’s bicycle-inspired, contemporary design lamps can be customised by playing with the colour of the spare parts. The design of the Bike Me Home series is a friendly combination of bicycle parts and the soft touch of wood. This combination together with the original design creates a special look and feel for every home or office.
The ‘flagship’ product made out of new spare parts to guarantee the same quality is another great example on how to give existing items a totally different function.

But… those early desk lamps show what upcycling is truly about. These discarded objects show so much character and history, difficult to be matched by new objects.
