AVALON: wooden blinds pendant lamp by Adrian Lawson – upcycleDZINE
There are things in this world that go together. For example suitcase and travel, rain and umbrella. And another one is summer and sunshine. Usually summertime means higher temperatures and a lot of sunshine. Objects that are very useful in keeping the warmth outside are sun blinds. And this brings me to the upcycled object used as an important part of a beautiful minimal design.
I’m a big fan of blinds because they create wonderful shadows with playful lines. Another thing that’s great is that they are adjustable in filtering the amount of light. One of the first posts on upcycleDZINE was about very original roller blind furniture by Gruba. And since then there has been only one other post about blinds. It was about a collection of upcycled blinds design by El nebot del persianer.

Wooden blinds filter light in a new way

Today I’m very glad that I can show you another unique upcycle design made out of blinds. It’s a pendant lamp that’s part of a series called ‘AVALON‘. The lamp is designed by Adrian Lawson, based in Avalon Beach | Australia. He grew up on a small remote Scottish island called Colonsay.

Adrian Lawson:

“Because of the difficulty in getting things to the island, people had to constantly improvise by recycling in order to get by. Over my life of designing and building, this has been one of the clearest memories from my childhood and still influences me to this day.”

When he moved to Australia in 2009 he noticed that good quality wooden venetian blinds were being discarded and ended up in landfill. This notion made him think about possibilities to give these beautiful objects a second life and a new function. The final result is this stunning concept you’re seeing here, Avalon.

Like all good designs, the end result seems so simple. But the whole design is very well thought out. The Avalon pendant shade comes in 12 combinations, ranging from dark wood to a lighter blonde. There are also two types of diffusers, white for a warm glow and opaque for a brighter look. The plastic components are available in grass green, beige and light blue. Materials, construction and colors all come together in an honest and original upcycle design pendant lamp. The pendant lamp comes as flat-pack and is very easy to assemble.
Great to see these quality wooden blinds filter light in a completely new and very attractive way.
