Sometime ago I mentioned that the pallet ‘hype’ wasn’t over. And now, 4 months later I can tell you that pallet wood is still very popular among upcycle designers and people who like upcycle design. Surfing the internet I’ve come across many great upcycle designs made out of pallet wood. Beautiful and unique upcycle design made out of only discarded pallet wood. Here on upcycleDZINE we’ve shown some outstanding pieces. Have a look at 2BY1 by Denis Maria, PRODUKTWERFT by Sascha Akkermann or Pallet wood armchair collection by Redolab.
Looking at many upcycled pallet wood designs I found a type of design that follows the ‘less is more’ concept. And by less I don’t mean money. No it’s about holding back on details and form. By doing so a minimalism designer can achieve a greater impact. In a dictionary I found the following meaning of minimalist: ‘being or offering no more than what is required or essential’.
Minimalist lamps show why ‘less is more’
Here’s a great example to show you what I’m talking about. The RE project by Hugo Joseph, a designer based in Montreal | Canada. RE is an experimental project on the border between graphic design and industrial/object design. Hugo designed a series of minimalist pallet wood lamps in combination with a beautiful minimalist corporate identity. The graphic design shown in a folder and website are in perfect line with the lamps.
Hugo Joseph:
“The RE project is part of an ecological approach motivated by the desire to create with a readily available and already processed material. The purpose was to demonstrate the potential of recycling and the reuse of wood pallet. Restore nobility to this wood normally left abandoned.”
Last but not least I want to mention that anybody who’s interested in working with discarded pallets should pay attention to the pallets history. On a site called earth911.com is an article about the question: are pallets safe for reuse projects? According to Candice Miller, a horticulture educator and expert from the University of Illinois Extension: “You have to consider where [the pallet] came from, what’s been shipped on it and what you’re going to use it for.”

Back to the RE project. I hope Hugo Joseph is planning on taking these lamps in production. I think quite some people would be interested in buying them.
