If you’re looking for minimal design, this creation should be interesting. I think it’s the most simple looking product on this blog so far. That doesn’t mean that it’s not interesting. No, this design product visualizes the maxim ‘less is more’ and is a fantastic example of giving a second life to an object you wouldn’t have thought of using again.

Wooden handle gets second life

The design you’re seeing here is an inelaborate coat hanger called ‘Handle’ and is designed by Reinier de Jong. If his name sounds familiar to you that could be because he has been featured before on upcycleDZINE.

Reinier is a Dutch designer who has created some great upcycle design like for instance his stunning Steel Chair. A unique piece of furniture made out of old wooden handles of brooms, rakes, spades, flagpoles. The Handle coat hangers are also based on that same concept. They are made from ash wooden handles and rods.

Reinier de Jong:

“The hangers can be used for a variety of things: towels, coats, hats, scarves etc. Ash wood is a wonderful type of hardwood. It grows in most parts of Europe and it is very resilient. It has a nice bright tone and a beautiful texture. Each set contains a mix of three, differently finished coat hangers. An opaque white finish, a stained white finished and a clear finish. Unfinished ash wood becomes visible where the coat hanger is cut and carved out.”

The coat hangers have an inserted hanger bolt and metric plug by which they can be mounted to the wall. Just pre-drill with 8 mm, insert the plug and fasten the hanger. And if you’re wondering if these hangers can handle some weight, maximum load per hanger is 2 kg.
If you like this piece of fantastic upcycle design you should visit his brand Stilst [Dutch for quietest], showing other tool handle inspired design.
I wonder which type of Handle I would prefer, the naturel ones or the patina version. And you?
