KILTER: pallet wood pendant by propellor – upcycleDZINE
One of the most upcycled materials out there at this moment is probably pallet wood. It’s just incredible how many upcycle designs are made out of used pallet wood. Very popular is furniture. But it’s actually used for almost anything indoor, outdoor and decoration. It’s even used for flooring, walls and even ceilings. And of course lighting.
Until now there have only been two upcycle lighting designs featured here on upcycleDZINE. One is The Pallet Project by Studiomama and the other one is by myself used for the MilkLantern and the stand at the Woonbeurs fair in 2014.

Pallet wood turned into a minimalist pendant

And now I want to show you another, but a totally different one. The other two were clearly made out of pallet wood. But this one isn’t. A minimalist lighting design called ‘Kilter‘. The pendant is a design by an independent multi-disciplinary studio called propellor, based in Vancouver | Canada.

“Kilter emerges from the process of taking something old and making it new, transforming something forgotten into something of use. With Kilter, a little elbow grease, beautiful joinery, and considered proportions reshape oak hardwood from disused shipping pallets into a light that is minimal in form but bursting with character.”

Propellor is a collaboration between Toby Barratt, Pamala Goddard and Nik Rust who take their social and environmental responsibilities seriously. “We work to reduce our impact at every level of our practice. This has made a big difference in the materials we choose, in our production processes and supply chain, even in the ways we get around town. Evolving as people, as designers, and as a company involves continually questioning our choices, learning new lessons and working to take every new step in the right direction.”
This pendant shows a fantastic looking environmentally responsible design. And that’s exactly what upcycle design should be like.
