When you look at the mbar Clock by jankodesign, KOZO by KOZO Lamp and New Wine Old Bottles by Peared Creation they have one thing in common. They all use upcycled iron piping. And some time ago I came across a collection that also makes upcycle design lighting with the use of iron piping. Not only lighting but also furniture.

Iron piping gives the design an industrial look and feel

One of the first upcycle design pieces I found on the web was a bookshelf system made out of iron piping. And once in a while, the design popped up again. Finally, I wondered who created these fantastic upcycle design products and found the project Oilfield Slang of Stella Bleu Designs. That’s when I noticed the unique collection consisting of lighting fixtures, coat racks, bookshelves and furniture. All handmade and created by using reclaimed steel, piping and discarded wood with a lot of character. Oilfield Slang is founded by Katie Katzenmeyer who majored in Art with a minor in Interior Design, based in Dallas, Texas | United States.

“I prefer working with old, salvage mediums and those in raw form (unaltered) to ensure every aspect of my creating process is controlled by me. This way, no boundaries or limits are placed on creativity and each piece slightly varies and truly one of a kind. No generic, pre-cut, pre-finished or refinished material will suffice, doing so would take all the blood, sweat and tears out of the constructing process, which of course is the fun part!”

Each individual piece of reclaimed steel and piping required for the particular design is measured and cut. According to Katie a lengthy, meticulous phase of the process, but the result in terms of quality is well worth it. “Next, the metal is thoroughly sanded and cleaned to rid the steel of all rust and corrosion as well as the greasy oily coating I use during the cutting process. Once the heavy steel is in place, it is then welded to ensure superior quality, stability, and durability.”
