I don’t know about you, but I find it exciting to see an upcycle design that’s made out of a material or product that I haven’t seen before. Until now there have been over 400 posts published here on upcycleDZINE. So there are quite a few designs to be found.
Every time I search for upcycle design to feature on this blog I’m especially on the look out for new things. Materials or products that I haven’t seen yet. And when I do find a design like that I’m very excited to write a post about it and show it to you.
After this short intro I want to show you what I’m talking about.
Posters turned into 3D lighting sculptures
Plastic advertisement posters from the Montreal metro are turned into mesmerizing lampshades, 3D lighting sculptures. The lampshade collection is called ‘131-6‘ and is designed by Otra [On The Road Again], a company based in Montreal | Canada and founded in February 2011 by Julie Ferrero and Guillaume Darnajou.
After graduating from the Grande Tourrache design school in Toulon, France in 2007, they both decided to go overseas to pursue further studies. In 2010, they received degrees in industrial design from the Faculté of Aménagement at the University of Montreal.
The 131-6 lampshades are sold as a flat package of 24 pieces, no tools are required for assembly. “This shade offers creative freedom as it transformed by varying the amount of parts used for assembly and the fact that all parts are reversible. The design depends on each individual cutting and the advertising campaign, making each product unique.”
The posters are individually cut into a sort of puzzle. They can be modified into different interesting variations together with a choice to reverse any part you want.
“All of our products are entirely hand-made using raw materials and never come into contact with any paint, solvents or glue. The reused materials used give our products a strong identity with unique characteristics effectively making each piece a distinct work of art.”

In my opinion 131-6 is very successful upcycle lighting design, and in more than one way. It’s beautiful, with the light turned on it creates very interesting shadows, it’s fun to assemble and best of all it’s made out of a discarded product. Exciting, right?
