NIGHTSHOP a design studio based in Rotterdam, created this stunning upcycle design lamp called Exploded Chandelier made out of second hand brass chandeliers – upcycleDZINE
The last post of this week is about a kind of structured chaos. Maybe some of you know a chandelier called ‘Porca Miseria‘ by German industrial designer Ingo Maurer. You’ll never forget that design once you’ve seen it. And although today’s featured design doesn’t have [not yet] the status of that classic, it did remind me of Porca Miseria.
Of course they are totally different, but still, they do have some similarities. They are both upcycle design pieces and a chandelier. And they both consist of lots of different ‘flowing’ parts.

A chandelier bringing two worlds together

The chandelier is called, how appropriate, ‘Exploded Chandelier‘. Designed by Dutch design studio NIGHTSHOP, founded by Ward van Gemert and Adriaan van der Ploeg in 2010 and based in Rotterdam | the Netherlands. The Exploded Chandelier is about two different worlds that come together in one piece, old and new.

The upcycle design chandelier is made out of second-hand brass chandeliers, typically found at old-fashioned Dutch bars and rearranged into an exploded view. “The viewer is reminded of those old fragmented pieces and at the same time surprised to see the combination of those pieces in a new and modern context.”

Exploded Chandelier is produced by DHPH [Den Herder Production House], a producer and distributor of handmade products and custom made pieces. NIGHTSHOP: “When we first saw DHPH’s Bas walking around on his clogs during a fancypants design fair, we immediately knew this guy was something different. Upon working with DHPH, this feeling remained: Something different. DHPH doesn’t simply produce. They have been deeply engaged in our design process feeding it from within without interfering too much. Collaborating with them made our P.O.V. products and the Exploded Chandelier far better than we could have imagined.”

On their website, Ward and Adriaan explain what their design studio is about: “NIGHTSHOP tries to create surprising products with a reference to everyday life and a strong focus on bringing aspects of ‘low-culture’ into their designs. Apart from that, NIGHTSHOP is also keen on investigating the boundaries between good and bad taste.”
I think you have to agree, seeing the Exploded Chandelier, they succeeded in creating a surprising and stunning product. It’s so intriguing, no matter which way you look at it.
