Today it’s ‘Friendly Friday’ or ‘Fun Friday’. Why? Well just look at the upcycle design series featured today. If you’re an animal lover, and I think most of you are, you should like this design. It’s a unique piece of design/art/lighting. And the best thing of all, it’s upcycled.
The series is called DUNK and is designed by Nishi Chauhan, based in Bangalore | India.
Some time ago I showed another series designed by Nishi called Animal Farm. And now she came up with yet another fantastic, friendly and fun [3 x f] design using a reclaimed beer bottle.
A beer bottle transformed into a friendly creature
Dunk is a warm and friendly fantasy creature in the form of an upcycled bottle lamp, featuring the wood and lac turnery craft of Channapatna in Karnataka, India. It is inspired by the idea of ‘finding beauty & joy in simple objects of daily use’. Dunk was recently awarded the Red Dot Design Award, Best of the Best, 2014, in Singapore. The lamp is handcrafted in India by master artisans of a nearly two centuries old traditional craft.
“Dunk is the latest animal to join Animal Farm, the series of endearing and lovable animal lamps. It tells us an intimate story with a simple and elegant style. Its bold and symmetrical forms made out of turned and lacquered wood accentuate the beautiful glass silhouette that forms its body. It acts as a mood light and provides a soft glow that lends a warm and restful atmosphere to the surroundings.”
Dunk can be used on the corner table, in the bookshelf, on the bedside table or a desk and comes in five colors: “naturally elegant in green, sharp and refined in black, warm and reassuring in yellow, bright and exuberant in red and orange”. Ecologically friendly, low voltage LEDs are used as the source of light.

Nishi Chauhan’s education in Architecture, and later in Industrial Design, has infused a love in her for form and sculpture. “Much of my work is inspired by the materials, colors and textures I see around me and have grown up with. I am happiest when working with my hands, and prefer a more tangible approach to design and craftsmanship. I enjoy collaborating with interesting people and working with the rich crafts of India. When not designing products, I split my time between pottery, analog photography and illustration.”
I was so happy when I got an email from Nishi telling me she had created Dunk.
I really like Animal Farm, but seeing Dunk and it being a lamp makes it one of my favorites.
