This is the third and last part about my visit to the DDW 2014 [Dutch Design Week] in Eindhoven | The Netherlands. This time it’s about upcycle design I stumbled upon at the same building Piet Hein Eek is situated. For those who haven’t read part 1, the building is an ex Philips factory. In 2010 Piet Hein Eek saved this piece of Industrial history from demolition by opening his new studio and store complex there.
Light and sound go together at the DDW 2014
Well in that very creative and inspiring atmosphere I came across a really amazing piece of upcycle design called ‘BELLAMP‘ by designer Akko Goldenbeld [Fb-page]. The main part of the lamp is an air tank. Here on upcycleDZINE there have been a few other designs that all use different kind of tanks. Just take a look at L’Allumeuse by La Firme and the colorful Tank Light by Castor.
Akko is a designer who likes to work with used materials and objects especially metal. “To find those I am seen a lot at the scrapheap. While I was on one of my visits there I found a couple of discarded air tanks which I took to my studio. While transporting the tanks, once in a while a wonderful sound emerged from the tanks, this triggered me as a musician to use it somehow.”
This is how the idea for the Bellamp was born. When I saw the lamp I was immediately triggered by it’s design and appearance. The black tank and white inside combined with the mechanism at the top of the lamp is so intriguing. When I saw and I heard how it worked it made me smile. By switching the lamp on or off it emits a long sound. “It’s as an ode to the light. People become more aware of using light in a world where everything sweeps by.”

Bellamp was part of an exhibition during the DDW called ‘We think highly of…‘ and was curated by Studio Steven Banken and Studio Rene Siebum in which they share their view on contemporary design. ‘Projects that connect to their design process and simultaneously offer a counterbalance in product and material.’
For me the Bellamp is a fantastic and unique combination of sound, light and design that marks a point in time when you turn on/off the light. Take a look at the video and I think it will make you smile too.
